Music Review
Born: Val Edward Kilmer
December 31, 1959
Birthplace: Los Angeles, California
"If we were in Vegas
would you, you'd be Sammy, right? I'd be Dean-o."
"I have a lot of musician friends, and I started hanging out with Sean Lennon, a lot, and his record is fantastic."
Multi-Talented
By Dawn Bonner
Great news, the multi-talented Val Kilmer is sharing his music with us again. In answer to what you are wondering, yes, the Val Kilmer. Yes, the one who portrayed the world's favorite Doc Holliday and Batman.
Origina
l, Freestyle Rock
Kilmer classifies his music as freestyle, rock, and folk rock genre. He has a broad range of music styles, from fun-loving satirical to ballad to love song. You're not hearing the same thing over and over because he's not playing the same thing over and over. The acoustic guitar is clean, fresh, and welcoming. In a couple of his tracks, you will hear interesting instrumental nuances that are quite clever.
It's cool that most of his songs are originals. They are familiar, like a best friend not seen in a while, the kind where you pick up right where you left off.
Vocally, Kilmer can go from soft and soothing to earthy with a bit of a husky-grit, as in 'Good God You're Everything.' The songs 'All Children are Beautiful,' 'We All Need Somebody,' and 'True Friends' reveal the lushness and depth of his voice.
Pigtails, Children, Love & Heartache
The singles seem to portray turning points in Kilmer's life. One of my favorite songs, 'Pigtails' was written by Kilmer in 1987, about the time he met his now ex-wife, Joanne Whalley. "I been trying but I failed. I been buying but it's no sale," are lyrics in "Pigtails" which may be his contemplations before winning her heart, as it took him a while to even get her attention.
'Pigtails' is fun, upbeat, and lively. At the end of the song, I enjoy closing my eyes and just being with the music—after listening to the foot-tapping rhythm and Kilmer's vocals, the end transports you to a place of relaxation, peace and tranquility. It is a wonderful trip; the same feeling as after receiving a massage.
Others are about his children, love, life, heartbreak, and spirituality. "The good Lord knows I need protection. And we all need somebody," are lyrics from the beautifully articulated 'We All Need.'
Mick Rossi
Mick Rossi is Kilmer's friend and writing partner, and now you can purchase the CD "Val Kilmer, Sessions with Mick" and Val's book of poetry 'Jack's Ghandi.
'Kilmer said, "It is a collection of seven tracks that are of a higher production quality than the ones that you can get via download." Right now, you can download your very own Kilmer/Rossi originals. There are 16 songs on his site for purchase, plus some full length songs for your listening pleasure at: myspace.com/valkilmermusic or visit valekilmer.com.
Kilmer's Charities
Not only are the songs captivating, it is a privilege to buy them because the profits are donated to charities. It will make you feel like a better person because it helps fund great places such as VDay, a movement to stop violence against women and girls; and The Wild Life Center in New Mexico, which takes in wildlife that has been hurt, nurtures them back to health and releases them back into the wild if at all possible.
Must Have
The music must be addicting to more people than just me because within two months time the songs had been played more than 60,000 times.
Kilmer and Rossi's music is a must have in your music library. It's like the classic blue blazer; good music never goes out of style.
The donations given to The Wild Life Center of New Mexico empowered them in releasing over 100 bison back into the wild on a 100-acre protected parcel.
